Name; Alaire Age; 31 Birthdate; April 1 (Aries) Home; Yilan, Kalria Family; Renare [father, 54; estranged], Maria [mother, 49], Evan [brother, 18], Aileen [sister, 22] Language; Common [fluent]; Kalrian [fluent]; Old Kalrian [weak] Lost; Any talent and skill with any/all weapons. |
The oldest son of a Kalrian man and his Falinese wife, Alaire grew up on a small Kalrian farm near the Bridge. It was, overall, a very quiet childhood: his father drank sometimes (resulting in an angrier, but easily avoided man), and sometimes his mother would cry for home, but they were fairly happy.
Alaire grew up the way a normal farmboy was expected to. He broke his arm climbing a tree, broke his finger after having it stepped on by a cow, broke his nose doing gods know what -- something stupid, most likely, a door slamming in his face or yet another tumble out of a tree. When he was nine, his sister was born, Aileen, and she was a beautiful, dark-haired little girl when the last of them was born.
It was that year that Alaire began the training that would define his life. At thirteen, he had no idea what he wanted, save for a burning ambition to be more than just a farmer. His father had had that once, he thought, before it melted away and he started to drink, and Alaire wouldn't end up like that. For lack of better options, he began training under the knights of Reiz, the nearest noble house. Simple things, at first: running their errands, rubbing their horses down, sharpening blades and spears. By the time he turned fourteen, however, he was learning the sword and lance (and turning out to be an adept at both), and at sixteen, had travelled to capital to join the Castle Guard.
The long move was for the job, of course, but also to get away from his family.
Or, more specifically, his father.
In the two years or so before he left, Alaire and Renare had begun to fight more and more often. Renare seemed to disagree with everything Alaire had to say, disdained all but the highest achievements. Alaire, for his part, rebelled farther and farther and pushed harder and harder. They often raged at each other for little things, stupid things, things that would set one or the other off for no discernible reason. And when Renare learned the truth about his son, about how Alaire would never marry a woman and never give him grandchildren, it was the final straw.
And so Alaire left home, with nothing but his clothes, his horse, and the money Reiz's knights had given him for the journey. He arrived in Yilan and, after proving himself to be one of the best mounted soldiers in the area, was promptly hired by the Castle Guard's captain.
He quickly rose through the ranks, until, at twenty-eight, he was promoted to captain after his predecessor's retirement. With his typical seemingly careless attitude, he totally revamped the system the guard had worked on. His success showed: in a year's time, it had nearly doubled, with over half of that number skilled cavalry. Now, five years later, things have settled to a confortable routine, and Alaire spends his days training recruits and drilling knights. And at the end of the day, he's damned proud of himself. |
The Alaire of 16 was resentful and insecure, awkward around others and sullenly quiet. Over the years, however, he's slowly grown into himself. He's comfortable with who he is, all things considered, and pleased with what he's accomplished.
Alaire is always, with few exceptions, cocky and flippant, treating everything and everyone arround him with the same lazy good humor. Some find it annoying, some infuriating, but most accept it as the Captain's typical behavior and brush it off. Even when angered or upset, he uses jokes as a way to disguise his true feelings.
It's been over five years since Alaire last made contact with his family (though he still recieves the odd letter from his mother and brother). Renare is one of the few people he truly dislikes, and he avoids talking about his family in general.
His preference for men, however, isn't as well-kept a secret. While he's never admitted to it outright, and he's never been seen with another man, he's also never been seen with a woman, and the castle is full of gossips. For the most part, though, people are willing to overlook that certain part of him, largely because of the citywide respect he commands. |
